School History

Carnegie Vanguard High School (CVHS) was established in the fall of 2002 as the successor to the highly successful Vanguard program at Jesse H. Jones Senior High School, originally created in 1977. Since its founding, CVHS has remained committed to providing a rigorous and challenging education designed for Houston ISD’s gifted and talented students.

The school has been guided by three principals: Dr. James Simpson (2002–2003), Lashawn Porter (Interim, 2003–2004), and Mr. Ramon Moss, who has served as principal since the fall of 2004. Under Mr. Moss’s leadership, Carnegie Vanguard has grown into a nationally recognized model for excellence in gifted education.

CVHS earned its first significant recognition in 2005, when the Texas Education Excellence Project at Texas A&M University ranked it the seventh best high school in Texas. Since then, the accolades have continued, establishing Carnegie Vanguard as one of the most distinguished public high schools in the nation.
